Throughout
the ages, wine has been the fountain of health and longevity. However,
it wasn't until the last century that wine was proven scientifically
to be beneficial to the cardiovascular system.
Pharmacologist
Joseph Vercauteron of the University of Bordeaux first discovered
in 1970 that grapes contain the most potent antioxidant present
in nature: polyphenol. More than twelve years later, the World Health
Organization showed that France had the lowest death rate from heart
disease among industrialized nations in the western world, despite
their habits of smoking, eating fatty food and shunning exercise.
They attributed this to the widespread daily consumption of wine
in France; thus, the French Paradox.
According
to Dr. Vercauteron's research, polyphenol forms a protective layer
on skin and stimulates the renewals of cells and collagen. Pholyphenol
also clears up free radicals, which damage and age cells.
